Visual Arts is a place where students can explore their creativity and develop skills that apply to such fields as Architecture, Fashion Design, Applied Design, Photography and Filmmaking, Animation and Computer Graphics, as well as the Fine Arts. Students can come into the program and enjoy art as a lifetime hobby or seriously develop their talents in the pursuit of a career. The Visual Arts program will provide you with the opportunity to experiment with different media and methods on your personal creative journey. You will be exposed to traditional and contemporary directions in the Visual Arts in such area as: drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, computer graphics, and mixed media. You will also develop your critical and aesthetic language skills through the analysis of key works of art through the ages, from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

AV110
Grade 9 Visual Arts
This course offers an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques, and styles. Students will have the opportunity to produce work in the areas of clay sculpting, graphic design, chalk and pastel drawings, and watercolor painting. They will learn methods of analysis and criticism to heighten their appreciation of Canadian art and art of other cultures.
Prerequisite: None

AV120
Grade 10 Visual Arts

This course emphasizes learning through practice; building on what students know; and introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic thinking and experimentation. Students will have the opportunity to produce work in the areas of clay and plaster casting, print-making, charcoal drawing, and acrylic painting. Student learning will include the refined application of the elements and principles of design, incorporating the creative design processes, and the relationship between form and content. Students will also learn about connections between works of art and their historical contexts.

ASM2O
Grade 10 Media Arts
This course focuses on the technical and artistic aspects of Media Art. This course provides students with a fun, positive atmosphere in which to explore their creativity with various computer software. Students will do all work in class and are not allowed to bring work home or to bring work from home into the class on a floppy or CD ROM due to viral concerns. It is encouraged that students spend time outside of class researching new and interesting websites and applications of the software we will be covering in class.

Grade 11 Visual Arts

This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in visual arts. Grade 11 Photography
This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will explore a range of subject matter through studio activities, and will consolidate their practical skills. Students will also analyse art works and study aspects of Western art history, as well as art forms from Canada and other parts of the world.
Included in this course are the basics of photography: cameras, darkroom practice, and the elements of photography, Also students will develop skills and knowledge in creativity, composition, and visual analysis. The course will also study the 150 Years of the History of Photography. NOTE: See the calendar section on the Visual Arts for information that is important to photography students.

Grade 11 Drawing

This course provides students will opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in DRAWING, A MOST USEFUL SKILL IN MANY CAREERS IN THE VISUAL ARTS. Students will explore a range of DRAWING TYPES through studio activities, and will consolidate their practical skills. Students will also analyze graphic art works and study aspects of Western Art History, as well as art forms from Canada and other parts of the world.
Prerequisite: Visual Arts, Grade 9 or 10, Open

ASM3O
Grade 11 Media Arts
This course emphasizes the development and skills required for the production of media art works , (e.g., photocopy art, computer animation, digital imaging etc...). Students will analyze art forms; use theories of art in analyzing and producing art. Students will produce a body of work demonstrating a personal approach. Students will analyse and evaluate media art works, and will create their own works using a variety of technologies and processes (e.g., computer graphics, photo-imaging, and digital video production techniques). Students will maintain a portfolio of their media art works. Art history and theory will be discussed in ongoing lectures throughout the course.
Prerequisite: Any grade 9 or 10 Arts Course

Grade 12 Visual Arts

This course focuses on the refinement of students' skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will analyze art forms; use theories of art in analyzing and producing art; and increase their understanding of stylistic changes in modern and contemporary Western art, Canadian (including Native Canadian) art, and art forms from various parts of the world. Students will produce a body of work demonstrating a personal approach.
Prerequisite: Visual Arts, Grade 11: AVI3M
Course Fee: $65

Grade 12 Photography for Studio

This course focuses on the refinement of students' skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will analyse art forms; use theories of art in analysing and producing art; and increase their understanding of stylistic changes in Western art, Canadian (including Native Canadian) art, and art forms from various parts of the world. Students will produce a body of work demonstrating a personal approach.
Photography is the basis for a variety of careers: fashion photography,
photo journalism, commercial photography for media and advertising and
fine art photography. This course explores the medium of darkroom photography in terms of developing the knowledge and skills of students contemplating a career in the areas of studio and art photography and media. Students will also explore the impact of various movements and individuals on the history of contemporary photography.
Prerequisite: Visual Arts, Grade 11, University/College Preparation or Open

AWN4M1
Grade 12 Painting

This course focuses on the refinement of students' skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will analyse art forms; use theories of art in analysing and producing art; and increase their understanding of stylistic changes in Western art, Canadian (including Native Canadian) art, and art forms from various parts of the world. Students will produce a body of work demonstrating a personal approach.
This course covers the study of painting techniques, materials, processes and image making in various media: water colour, gouache and acrylics. A large part of the program also studies the history of painting through chronological analysis as well as individual projects.
Prerequisite: AWL3M1 recommended
Course Fee: $45

ASM4O
Grade 12 Media Arts
This course focuses on the refinement of students' skills and knowledge in media arts. Students will analyze art forms; use theories of art in analyzing and producing art. Students will produce a body of work demonstrating a personal approach. This course emphasizes the development of the knowledge and skills required for the production of interactive media art forms (e.g., interactive art installation, interactive video, simulations, and network art). Students will analyse and evaluate media art works, and will create their own works using a variety of technologies and processes (e.g., computer graphics, photo-imaging, and digital video production techniques). Students will maintain a portfolio of their media art works. Art history and theory will be discussed in ongoing lectures throughout the course.
Prerequisite: Recommended 11 Media Arts: ASM301
Studio Fee: $50.

Students are required to pay course fees/materials in the Visual Arts department.

Students are required to pay a Studio Fee at the beginning of each semester. This fee does not cover field trips that are an average cost of $15.00 per student for transportation and gallery admission depending on the destination. Students are also required to purchase a folder for their Digital Portfolio in Media Arts. This folder should be durable, because it will contain documentation of their personal artworks on CD, Photo papers, and Art papers.

Requirements for Students of Photography

Grade 11 and 12 Photography students can expect to cover the cost of all photographic paper, any extra film, and an art kit valued at $25.00 (minimum $80.00) an 11" x 14" sketch book, and have access to a 35 mm SLR camera in good working condition, with manual shutter and aperture setting. Students are encouraged to speak to the Department Head Mrs. Currie or Photography Teacher Mrs. Ungar well in advance of taking this course. DUE TO THE TECHNICAL AND CHEMICAL NATURE OF PHOTOGRAPHY, STUDENTS WITH ALLERGIES, OR OTHER PHYSICAL AILMENTS SHOULD CONSULT WITH THEIR DOCTOR BEFORE REQUESTING PHOTOGRAPHY COURSES

Requirments for Media Arts

Due to limited availability of space on our school server, it is highly recommended students purchase their own USB mass storage device with a minimum of 20GB of space. iPods are acceptable provided the student brings their connection cables. Media Arts does its best to provide a secure work environment but unfortunately is not responsible for student's lost or stolen equipment.*

There are equipment and internet use agreement as well as a consent form from the YRDSB for using images of students on web-pages and for reproduction that students must sign once they enrol in the class.
