MUSIC ENSEMBLES

Junior Band

The Junior Band is made up of students in the grade 9 beginning band and experienced band. The Junior band is a credit course that rehearses Wednesdays after school. The Junior Band performs at two concerts a year, the Ontario Band Association Band Festival and the Earth Charter Festival. Every year the Junior band attends a music leadership retreat at the Jackson’s Point Salvation Army Conference Centre where they work with guest conductors and clinicians and participate in a variety of musical activities and team building activities.

Wind Ensemble
The Wind Ensemble is made up of students in grade 10 through 12 with a few very proficient grade 9 students. The Wind Ensemble is a credit course that rehearses on Tuesday mornings and Thursday after school. The Wind Ensemble performs at two concerts a year, Remembrance Day Assemblies, Awards Assemblies, provincial and National music festivals and Earth Charter.

Jazz Band
The Jazz Band is an extra-curricular ensemble made up of students in grade 9 through 12. The Jazz Band rehearses on Monday mornings and is conducted by Lani Sommers and Bruce Davis. The Jazz Band performs at two concerts a year and on parents nights.

Choir
The Vaughan Secondary School Choir is an extra-curricular ensemble that rehearses on Wednesday mornings. The group is made up of grade 9 through 12 students and is directed by Lorraine Ghobrial. The choir performs at two concerts a year, Earth Charter Festival and other assemblies.

Classic Rock Band
The Classic Rock Band is directed by Mr. Bruce Davis. The band meets on Fridays after-school. The ensemble performs at two coffee house nights a year.

Music Council
The VSS Music Council is made up of students in grades 9 – 12. The music council represents the classes and performing ensembles at Vaughan Secondary School. They organize social activities, fund raising initiatives, and music nights.

Grade 7 & 8 Enrichment Band

The VSS Grade 7 & 8 Enrichment Band is run by senior VSS Music Students. Interested grade 7 & 8 students from the feeder schools come every Thursday evening for private lessons on their instruments, sectionals and full band rehearsal. The senior VSS Students teach the lessons and run sectionals each week. Ms Sommers runs the full band rehearsal. The Enrichment band performs at both concerts.
